in light of trump new statement concerning the Tariffs placed on Canada's goods - https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/trump-tariffs-canada-first-day-1.7435957, do you think Canadian officials should still act like Tariffs are going to be placed and start the long process of divesting the Canadian economy from the US ?
There has been talk of a need to diversify the Canadian export market for years. There is definitely recognition that overreliance on the U.S. as an export market is untenable, that became very obvious during Trump's first term. There is now a lot more discourse about increasing interprovincial trade as a way to spur economic growth, and hopefully we can make some headway there. The fact is, it is not easy to divest from the US market. The closeness of the U.S. and the size of their economy, and the fact that we have a lot of natural resources and agricultural product that they need is of great benefit to Canada. Tariffs being placed on Canadian goods and Canada's retaliation is not a forgone conclusion, right now that is all there is to look forward to.
